Fire Service

We have four Fire Brigades in County Westmeath ready to help you in an emergency, but we also can help you with Your Fire Safety and other aspects of the Fire Service. Click on the links below.

The four Fire Brigades in Westmeath are Mullingar, Kilbeggan, and Castlepollard Fire Brigades (from Westmeath Fire Authority), and Athlone Fire Brigade (Athlone Fire Authority), Fire Brigades from other counties service part of Westmeath which are nearer to those Fire Brigades.

The Fire Brigades in Westmeath are retained fire brigades i.e. each fire fighter is part-time and is called to the fire or other emergency by a paging system from the East Regional Control Centre (ERCC) in Dublin. We attend over 1100 calls a year.  Incident types vary from small domestic fires to large scale multi-agency emergencies.

If you didn't know better, you might assume that our role was fairly clear cut: to prevent and control fires.  But as any of our firefighters will tell you, there's much more to the job than that.

Our firefighters are also involved in projects to help people learn about fire safety and how to protect themselves and their families from fire.

The different roles which our firefighters carry out means that our fire firefighters train in a lot of different areas.
