What is a Development Plan?
The Development Plan sets out the overall strategy for the proper planning and sustainable development for the County for a period of 6 years. The document generally consists of a written statement and accompanying maps. The Plan is made by the Elected Members of the Local Authority and through the Elected Members reflects the broad aims and wishes of the people of Westmeath.
Why do we have a Development Plan?
The Local Authority is obliged to make the Plan under the Planning and Development Act 2000-2011.
In reviewing the existing County Development Plan and preparing the new County Development Plan 2014-2020, regard must be had to the existing higher level Planning framework and hierarchy of plans.
Why is a Development Plan Important?
- The development plan is important as it sets down a guide as to how development should progress in the area where you live. All developments must comply with the requirements of the plan.
- The Westmeath County Development Plan will provide the main public statement of planning policies and objectives at county level.
- The policies and objectives can be critical in determining the appropriate location and form of different types of development as the development plan is one of the factors against which planning applications are assessed
Development Plan Review Process
The process of reviewing the existing Westmeath County Development Plan 2008-2014 which was adopted on the 25th January 2008 must begin 4 years after the making of the last development plan and thus the review process is now commencing.
