Water Conservation
What we do
The council recognises that too much of the water it pumps, treats and distributes each year is lost by leakage from distribution mains, some of which are old and need on-going repair and renewal.
The continuing maintenance and renewal of these mains is being accelerated and our Water Conservation Unit works to reduce the current unacceptably high level of water loss on the 1200 km of distribution mains throughout the county.
What you can do
There is considerable wastage and loss of water on some supplies to individual premises - houses, farms, etc. Small holes in a half-inch pipe can waste over 10,000 gallons per day! Consumers should ensure that there is no water loss/wastage on their supply.

Mains Rehabilitaiton Programme
Westmeath County Council has been approved for funding of €6.7 million over 3 years for a mains rehabilitation programme in Mullingar and Athlone. The objective of this programme over the coming year is to reduce unaccounted for water (leakage and wastage) and reduce the number of lead service mains and connections in these towns. A certain amount of lead pipe replacement has taken place in Athlone and Mullingar during 2009, 2010 and 2011 and it continues to be Council policy to replace any lead pipe work or service connection where encountered during routine working on the water mains distribution system.
An upgrade of the watermain from Lynn Cross to Miltownpass Watermain Network improvement works commenced in June 2011 and the new watermain was commissioned in January, 2012. Site Investigation Works have been completed Athlone & Mullingar Town. The upgrade of the watermain at Coosan, Athlone was completed January, 2012
